Dementia Friends is a national initiative run by the Alzheimers Society. In the words of the Alzheimers Society “Dementia Friends learn a little bit about what it’s like to live with dementia and turns that understanding into action. This could be helping someone find the right bus or being patient in a till queue if someone with dementia is taking longer to pay. Every action counts. Being a Dementia Friend isn’t about volunteering or fundraising (though you can do that too if you want).” This week the number of Dementia Firends nationally passed 500,000 – an incredible achievment.
Like many businesses we come across people living with dementia all the time, so we took the decision that we wanted all of our staff to become dementia friends. They were all keen, so as a Dementia Champion I ran a short 45 minute information session where everybody learned about the disease and decided on one action they would take to help build a dementia friendly community. As with many businesses, some of my team have experience of a family member with dementia, which made the session even more helpful.
Could your staff benefit from a similar session? Would you like the world to know that your business is dementia friendly? I have decided to run some sessions in and around Ipswich for local businesses. The sessions are completely free and I can come to you depending on the numbers involved, or you can join one of our planned open sessions.
